Your life will be impacted in many ways by negative self-talk.

We become our worst enemies without realizing it. This can lead to a loss of self-confidence, and even depression. If this negative outlook is not addressed, it can lead to a lack of happiness in our lives, which can cause us to be stressed and anxious, making it difficult to relax.

How do you fix it? It’s actually much easier than you might think. Positive self-talk is key to success. Follow these six steps for practical help.

Start by noticing yourself doing it. These three steps will stop negative self-talk from gaining a foothold.

Write It Down

A journal is a great way of keeping track of your thoughts. Write down what you think about the day, before going to bed. This will allow you to let go any feelings that may be lingering when you try to fall asleep. You will be able to see where you are by re-reading the entries. You might have been more negative than you think.

Positive vs Negative

Say “No”

You have to catch negative thoughts in your head and stop them from becoming reality. You must immediately say “no” to any self-talk that is causing you to feel less positive. If you feel the need, say “Stop” loudly.

Snap Back

This therapy has been recommended by psychologists for years to stop bad thoughts. Simply wrap a rubber band around the wrist of your wrist. It shouldn’t be too tight. You can simply snap the rubber band every time you have a negative idea. You’ll eventually stop having negative thoughts and you will be able to avoid the ‘punishment’

“Rubber snapping the wrist, says Therapist.”

The next step is to follow these steps to implement positive self-talk:

Tone It Down

To take the sting out of negative thoughts, what word can you use to change them? You might be’stupid’ instead of’mistaken’. By paying more attention to what you say, you can shift your self-talk towards the positive.

Sides

You can make it a game. Ask yourself every time you hear yourself make a negative or neutral statement in your head. You will be amazed at how many of these thoughts can you change.

Questions

Turn negative assumptions into questions, instead of listening. Instead of listening to negative assumptions, ask them. For example, “That’s impossible” could be “How can that be possible?” Questions seek out solutions and statements are already definitive.

You’ll see a change in your life by paying attention to what you do, and taking action with intention to make it better. You feel more relaxed and even more optimistic. You begin to feel better about yourself. This is where you discover the potential that you have been waiting for.
